Coherence

A coherent paper contains clear, concise, well-organized statements that support the thesis of a paper. Use the following tips to create coherence.

1. Use active voice constructions as much as possible.

2. Change noun-based phrases to active verbs. Example:

Noun-based phrase: The quotation is a reference to William Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Active verb: The quotation refers to William Shakespeare's Hamlet.

3. Avoid "to be" constructions wherever possible.

Example using "to be" construction: "The prizes for the golf tournament were furnished by local businesses."

Example that avoids "to be" construction: "Local businesses furnished the prizes for the golf tournament."

4. Use transitional phrases when necessary.

5. Correct the Four Major Errors.

6. Alternate sentence structure.

7. Use different introductory phrases to emphasize continuity.
