Comma Splices

A comma splice occurs when two or more independent clauses are joined together with a comma. The following sentence shows a comma splice:

Los Angeles is a city in Southern California, it is the most populous city on the West Coast.

You can use different methods to correct a comma splice.

1. Replace the comma with a period.

Ex. Los Angeles is a city in Southern California. It is the most populous city on the West Coast.

2. Replace the comma with a semicolon.

Ex. Los Angeles is a city in Southern California;it is the most populous city on the West Coast.

3. Add a coordinating conjunction (and,but, or) after the comma.

Ex. Los Angeles is a city in Southern California, and it is the most populous city on the West Coast.

4. Recast the sentence.

Ex. Los Angeles, California, is the largest city on the West Coast.
