Sentence Fragments
A sentence fragment is an
incomplete sentence punctuated as a complete sentence, and it
generally meets one or more of the following requirements:
- It lacks a verb (Ex. The
snow falling.)
- It does not contain a
subject (Ex. Students
read. And write.)
- It is a subordinate clause that is
not used in a complete sentence. (Ex. Since he played
football well.)
Use the following strategies to correct sentence fragments in your
work.
- If a sentence fragment does not
contain a verb, add a verb and make sure that it agrees with the
subject.
- Wrong: The snow falling.
- Correct: The snow falls.
- If a sentence fragment does not
contain a subject, add a subject and make sure that it agrees with
the verb.
- Wrong: Students read. And write.
- Correct: Students read and write.
- If a sentence fragment contains a
subordinate clause, complete the sentence to clarify its
meaning.
- Wrong: Since he played football well.
- Correct: Since he played football well, he earned a college
scholarship.
